I'll have to try that sometime if I ever play vanilla it again. Explains why it seems like armor never seemed to do much (read random) on my barb in vanilla d2. More specifically this is what you can expect from the gift box.
Keep in mind the level challenges, you get awesome perks for doing them before the level requirement. Some guys are invincible, some can't be targeted, some will 1-hit kill you. Good lord you will die a lot, don't feel too bad about it. I stack strength and all resist on armor (typically as needed), because stat requirements are pretty tough. You can get items later on that double the bonuses from MO's, they're called honorific items. MO's are expensive little orbs that can craft additional affixes on items but increase the level requirement by 4 each time. I was averaging maybe 30 seconds/run on my Amazon, keep in mind I started from scratch last week too. You get 2 unique items/run, meaning 2 shards. In the first difficulty, I found Mephisto runs to be the quickest/most reliable to stack up on arcane crystals. If you upgrade them you need a arcane crystal and a rune. When you outlive your gift items, you can upgrade them. Annoying, but I think that's specific to D2 in general, and they increase the base movespeed to compensate. You can do this over and over, getting the ones you want. When you kill Griswold you get a gift that contains 3 character specific unique items. The medianxl forums have game guides per character. I don't know what you're going in with but I would highly recommend following some sort of guide the first time.
